Liverpool may not shout about its curry houses as loudly as its neighbours down the M62, who have their famous curry mile, nor does it enjoy the reputation which the Midlands’ rich curry tradition basks in. However, our fair old city is not without its fair share of top notch Indian restaurants.
Instead of being concentrated to one area, you will find amazing curries dotted all over the region, from Waterloo to the Wirral. A curry night is one of life’s rich pleasures, so if you are partial to a poppadom or barmy for Balti, take a look over this mouthwatering selection of some of the best curry houses on Merseyside.
You’ll find that a large percentage of restaurants on the Indian subcontinent deal solely in vegetarian fare and Sanskruti has brought this tradition to curry lovers in this country. Carnivores will not be disappointed however when they taste the delightful dishes served up at this Bixteth Street establishment. It is also one of the few places on Merseyside that offers the famous hanging naan, which adds an extra dimension to an already fabulous Indian dining experience. Nisha Katona has done lots for Liverpool’s restaurant scene; a frequent guest on various television cooking shows, she is also a tireless promoter of the city’s culinary assets at foodie events across the region and beyond. Perhaps her most appreciated contribution to the city though is Bold Street’s Mowgli, the first Indian street food eatery in Liverpool and an instant hit with foodies on Merseyside. The simple but tasty dishes justify the restaurant’s popularity and it’s no surprise that new sister restaurants have opened up on Water Street in Liverpool and over in Manchester.
Following the success of their Old Swan curry house - somewhat of a hidden gem - Yukti opened up another branch in the heart of what could be considered Liverpool’s curry district, Renshaw Street, in 2017. Like the original branch in Old Swan, the staff are attentive and pleasant, but with a street food twist there are more amazing dishes to discover. The thali selections are perfect for those who want to experience a range of flavours and curry types while the Beatles in India decor palette is a lovely nod to the Merseyside’s most famous flirtation with Indian culture.
Another member of the next generation of curry houses on Merseyside, Remora is tucked away off Hardman Street, behind The Flute pub. It is not the most traditional variety of curry house when you compare the other places on offer on Renshaw Street (in the form of Masterchef, Indian Delight and UnI) but it does offer a fantastically vibrant dining experience. Remora is a cosy restaurant with staff who are more than happy to help you find your perfect dish.
Sultan’s Palace has held its place at the bottom of Victoria Street for many years and is overlooked by too many curry fans. Its huge underground expanse means it’s not as cosy as some restaurants, and the menu may be towards the higher end of the price spectrum, but there are plenty of delicious dishes on offer that’ll take you on a sensational journey of taste. Make sure you try one the Palace’s specialty tandoori dishes from the restaurant’s famed clay oven on your next visit.
Residents of Crosby and Waterloo are comprehensively catered for on the curry front. As well as the twin Nepalese restaurants Da Gurka and Mount Gurka, there is the highly rated Saffron. If you’re not lucky enough to call yourself a local, all three restaurants are only a short walk from Waterloo train station, so everyone can easily enjoy everything these terrific curry houses have to offer. Saffron has earned a reputation for doing the classics well, whilst surprising you with Chef’s Specials such as the Malai Kabab, which is specially made with cashew nut cream. We’re just mad about Saffron.
Venturing further south, the Gulshan has earned a place in many a curry lover’s heart, having established itself in Cressington and garnered more than its fair share of awards over the years. In recent months, the Aigburth Road eatery has changed its set-up, with the curry house now based on the first floor of the building. This has only improved the whole experience, and a visit there promises a family-friendly environment, brimming with some awesome grub. Just a short walk from Cressington Station, Gulshan is one of the city’s gems.
If you wanted to travel further afield (or you’ve already tried all Liverpool’s curry scene has to offer!), you could hop on the Wirral line and go to Chester for a special treat at Barton Rouge. Now with branches in Heswall and Liverpool, Barton Rouge have grown their business with a dedication to delectable curry in a plush environment. Their original Chester branch deals in show-stopping hanging naans and has a menu inspired by the Chandni Chowk street hawkers and roadside cafés of Old Delhi. It’s the perfect end to a day exploring Chester’s rich history (or enjoying a shopping day!).
