Your brand new trains are on track for 2020 and to get ready for their arrival Phase 7 of the platform upgrade work will start on the Chester line on 2 March 2019. This will also affect passengers travelling on the Ellesmere Port line.

Platform upgrade work will be taking place at all stations between Chester and Rock Ferry. Rail replacement buses will run between:

  • Hooton and Hamilton Square from 2 March to 22 March
  • Chester and Hooton from 25 March to 2 April

On Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 March a normal train service will run.

Saturday 2 March – Friday 22 March

Rail replacement buses will run between Hooton and Rock Ferry, calling at all stations. All buses will also call at Hamilton Square where there are more trains running to and from Liverpool.

Express buses will also run between Hooton and Hamilton Square stations Monday to Saturday.

Passengers can board trains at Hamilton Square to complete their onward journey.

There will be train timetable alterations on both the Chester and Ellesmere Port lines. Passengers travelling on these lines will need to board a rail replacement bus at Hooton station.

If you are travelling from Rock Ferry, Green Lane or Birkenhead Central there will be a reduced train service with trains running every 15 minutes. Full timetable information can be found below.

Monday 25 March – Tuesday 2 April

There will be rail replacement buses running between Chester and Hooton calling at all stations.

Passengers can board trains at Hooton to complete their onward journey.

There will be timetable alterations for trains to and from Hooton and on the Ellesmere Port line. Six car trains will run where possible and there is free car parking at many Merseyrail stations, including 109 spaces at Ellesmere Port. 

If you are travelling to or from Capenhurst station there will be a 30 minute rail replacement bus service.

Assisted Travel

Our usual arrangements to support customers that need assistance to travel will remain in place during the works.

We would encourage all customers who require assistance to contact us in advance so that we can offer the level of support needed where possible. Ideally 24 hours’ notice is required, however we understand that this may not always be possible and will work hard to ensure you can complete your journey with us.

Further Travel Advice

Please plan ahead and allow extra time for your journey. Journeys may take longer especially at peak times.

Please note that bikes (with the exception of folding bikes) cannot be taken on rail replacement buses, and prams and pushchairs must be folded.
