Information about Cycle Storage

Travelling on the Train - Merseyrail Bike Policy

Our trains have designated areas for cyclists. These are situated at both ends of the train. As our trains can become very congested during peak hours (before 9.30am), we advise, for your comfort, you travel off peak with a bike.

Please see below the full Merseyrail Bike Policy:

  • There is no fee for the transportation of cycles.
  • Merseyrail offers free cycle storage at all our stations on the network.
  • Our trains have designated areas for cyclists situated at both ends of the train.
  • There is no requirement to make a reservation for your cycle on the Merseyrail service.
Bikes at Stations

If you are travelling with your bike we recommend that you allow yourself some extra time at the station. You may find that the station is busy or that you need to use the ticket gates, a footbridge or a lift and the extra time will accommodate for this.

We would also recommend you are in position on the platform at least five minutes before your train is due to depart.

When leaving your bike at the station please ensure you take all removable items of value with you, such as lights, panniers and computers. Please understand that if you leave your panniers on your bike then we reserve the right, if necessary, to search these in the interests of security.

Please lock your bike securely as we cannot be held responsible for theft or the loss of any items.

As part of the maintenance of our cycle storage facilities we undertake regular audits and will identify and remove any bikes that have been abandoned to ensure facilities can be used to their maximum capacity.

All bikes carried on the train and left in station storage are done so at the owner’s risk.

For safety reasons, bikes must not be ridden on the platform or on the train.

Please take care if carrying a bike on staircases ensuring you take care of both your own safety and the safety of others.

If a lift is available that can accommodate the bike then it may be used.

Please switch off your rear red light or any flashing strobe lights on your bicycle whilst you’re in a station as this can distract train drivers.

From time to time it is necessary to carry out rail improvement work or maintenance. At these times if rail replacement buses are in operation bikes are unable to be accommodated.

Travelling on the Train

All of our trains have designated areas for cyclists situated at both ends of the train. During peak hours our trains get very busy and we would recommend for your own comfort that you consider travelling off peak when travelling with a bike.

Bikes must be stored in the designated area on the train and must not obstruct doors and aisles. Bikes left in doorways or which are causing other obstructions will be moved to the correct area of the train.

If there is not enough space for your bike to be safely stored on the train, you may be asked wait for the next service.

Reservations are not required on Merseyrail trains, however if travelling onto other networks we would recommend checking with other operators as reservations may be required.

Please do not lock your bike to any part of the train. You are also reminded not to leave your bike unattended at any time during your journey.

Tandems and tricycles are not permitted.

Other train operating companies may require reservations therefore please check with the relevant train operating company for full details.

Please note: During special events it may be considered too busy for bikes to be allowed on Merseyrail trains for safety reasons. Please check before you travel.

We are also unable to allow bikes on Merseyrail replacement bus services during engineering work and service disruption.

Motorcycles are not permitted on any service. As stated in the National Rail Conditions of Carriage bikes are carried at owner’s risk. For further information visit www.nationalrail.co.uk

If you are considering taking your bike onto a Merseyrail train, or thinking about using our storage facilities on stations, there are a few guidelines you are advised to read.
