Success at National Rail Awards

Awards & Achievements

18 September 2015
  • Merseyrail wins safety award and small station of the year award
  • Highly commended in large station of the year award

Merseyrail has triumphed at the national rail awards last night, scooping the safety award and the small station of the year award for Orrell Park. We were highly commended in the large station of the year category for Liverpool Central.

With the judges looking for a tangible commitment to improving safety, our submission for this category focused on health and well-being and the proactive work we have done this year to maintain safety and prevent accidents. It also highlighted our efforts to promote better public health, generally.

Examples include the installation of defibrillators at all stations and training of all front-line staff in cardiopulmonary resuscitation. We have also hosted roadshows with charities, the Samaritans and Calm, to improve people’s understanding of mental health.

Orrell Park boasts recent improvements, including new lifts to enhance accessibility and an upgraded ticket office. Lovingly cared for by volunteer group, the Orrell Park Regeneration Group, it has lots of well-tended flower beds, creating a pleasant, attractive environment. The station is on the Ormskirk branch of the northern line.

Jan Chaudhry-van der Velde, Merseyrail’s managing director, said: ‘I’m thrilled that the hard work we’ve put into both safety and station improvement has been recognised. And, it’s thanks to successful partnerships with Merseytravel, Network Rail, as well as enthusiastic volunteers that we can continue making our railway a safer and more attractive environment for the benefit of customers.’
