The current heatwave has caused rails on the network to become hot and expand, making it difficult for trains to pass along the track. Passengers experienced disruption on the Kirkby and Ormskirk lines on Friday of last week as a result.
Additionally, Merseyrail has also played a key role in supporting the Lime Street upgrade by
dedicating a large number of trains to carry mainline passengers between Liverpool South Parkway and Liverpool Central, which has reduced the availability of units to support elsewhere on the network.
Andy Heath, Managing Director at Merseyrail said:
"I'd like to offer my sincere apologies to passengers and reassure them that we are doing everything we can to keep services running both during the heatwave and while our units are in high demand as we continue to support the Lime Street upgrade.

Merseyrail was recently found to have some of the most satisfied passengers in the country as it was named one of the top 3 operators in the spring 2018 National Rail Passenger Survey.
