First Costa Coffee Opens on Merseyrail

Station & Service Updates

17 October 2017

The first branch of Costa Coffee on the Merseyrail network has opened at Liverpool South Parkway, as part of our commitment to continually improving station environments and enhancing facilities for customers.

We are keen to continually adapt, providing services that today's busy traveller enjoys and expects. This new Costa is located in the heart of the station, and will prove ideal for passengers making journeys, both long and short.'

Jan Chaudhry-van der Velde

Managing Director

Featuring a spacious indoor seating area, the new Costa is on the main concourse, close to the ticket barriers.

The outlet was timed to open just before work starting to upgrade of Liverpool Lime Street, during which Liverpool South Parkway is acting as an essential transport hub. The work started on 30 September and spans three weeks.

Over this period, trains that normally go to and from Lime Street are being re-directed to Liverpool South Parkway, which is playing a vital part in keeping passengers on the move and the Liverpool city region open for business.

Liverpool South Parkway is accommodating thousands of extra customers every day over the three weeks.

To mark the occasion, an informal ceremony took place, presided over by Merseyrail's managing director, Jan Chaudhry-van der Velde and representatives from Caterleisure, franchise partner of Costa Coffee.

Jan Chaudhry-van der Velde, said:

‘Liverpool South Parkway is a modern interchange, aimed at people travelling within the city region, possibly to nearby John Lennon airport, as well as much further afield. We are keen to continually adapt, providing services that today's busy traveller enjoys and expects. This new Costa is located in the heart of the station, and will prove ideal for passengers making journeys, both long and short.'

Christine Thorpe, managing director of Caterleisure, commented:

‘We are very pleased to be opening our ninth Costa Coffee store at Liverpool South Parkway. Stations are increasingly becoming community hubs where rail and bus customers and locals use the facilities. Many of us enjoy a cup of coffee or cold drink when travelling or meeting friends, so in partnership with Costa Coffee and Merseyrail, we are providing good quality facilities for any customer whether they are using the station amenities or not. We have recruited nine local people to run the store and have invested over £180,000 in this new venture.’

Frank Rogers, Merseytravel chief executive said:

‘The opening of Costa Coffee at Liverpool South Parkway really enhances the customer experience with quality refreshments and services and I’m sure customers will agree it’s a welcome addition to the station.  It was also perfect timing as it is helping to create the right environment at South Parkway during its role as w the temporary main rail ‘hub’ during the Lime Street station upgrade work.’
