Try these great new food and drink places in January

There has never been a better time to be a foodie on Merseyside. If you want to experience the tastes of cuisines from around the world, chances are you’ll find an eatery specialising in your desired nosh. If you want to live it up with some cutting edge high end fare there are restaurants such as Roski, Fraiche and Burnt Truffle which have captured the attention of broadsheet food critics. And for more relaxed social affairs, there are the food courts such as the Baltic Market and Marine Street Social providing informal dining experience with a wealth of options to suit all palettes.

However, with all these foodie havens constantly opening up it can be difficult to keep track. And so, as the new year begins and in the spirit of TRYanuary, we have picked out some of the best food and drink outlets to open in the last few months to go out and try. Why not take the train there and make a night of it. Just because December is over does not mean you have to stop treating yourself!

HAFLA HAFLA

Hafla -hafla-

Just a five-minute walk from St Michaels station, Lark Lane has long been a trusted culinary enclave. Bars and restaurants line the short thoroughfare and most years there are additions to the offer. At the end of 2018 two very exciting new restaurants opened up offering the popular small plates which are now de rigeur in Liverpool but nonetheless mouth-watering. Hafla Hafla grew out of a popular pop-up which made it’s name at the Baltic Market. Their halloumi fries became the cuisine of the year and the rest of the menu lives up to the vibrancy of this beloved snack.

Plan your night out here.

POLIDOR 68

Polidor

Just a few doors down from Hafla Hafla and similarly making a fantastic job of utilising a cosy unit on ‘the lane’, Polidor 68 is a trendy retreat from the more boisterous haunts of Lark Lane. Taking its cues from the Parisian bistros, the wine bar and restaurant specialises in cocktails and small plates and has a wonderfully welcoming atmosphere with live music, Aigburth sophisticates sat at the bar and artwork inspired by the 1968 civic unrest from which the establishment takes its name.

RUDY’S

Rudys1

Liverpool has not been shy in taking advantage of the universal truth that everyone loves pizza. And despite slice lovers already being well-catered for in the city, Manchester crust purveyors Rudy’s opened their third branch on Castle Street in November. Pizza fans rightly rejoiced as the Trip Advisor-endorsed ‘best pizza in the UK’ was brought to Merseyside. Sitting in the former residence of CAU steak house, the pizzeria will doubtless soon work its way into the hearts of foodies in the business quarter. Only a five-minute walk from Moorfields, make Rudy’s a priority for your January tick list.

Plan your night out here.

QUEENS LIVERPOOL

Admittedly, we are getting ahead of ourselves with this one. At the time of writing Queens wine bar and bistro is still to open. However, with a team behind it consisting of the originators of some of Liverpool’s best loved independent food and drink outlets, we believe this is a safe bet. Situated on Queen Avenue behind North John Street, the clues on Queens’ instagram page point to this being a vital addition to Liverpool’s gastronomic offer.

FRANKIES CROSBY

Frankies1

Part of the St Modwen regeneration project in Crosby, Frankie’s is another restaurant which boasts a fantastic team behind the scenes. A Masterchef winner, an Apprentice contestant and one of the brains behind the brilliant Izakaya Japanese restaurant have put their talents together to bring North Merseyside foodies this bagel, coffee and cocktail haven.

Plan your night out here.

BAN DI BUL

Ban Di Bul1

Bold Street’s renaissance as a foodie paradise showed no sign of abating in 2019. The latest addition to a street which already boasts cuisine from Italy, Vietnam, Japan, Mexico, and Greece (to name but five) is Ban Di Bul. This stylish eatery, the sister restaurant of its flagship in Manchester, offers Korean barbecue and other traditional national fare such as soups and noodles. The unique selling point of this place is the option of cooking your own food using the on-table barbecue kits. So there is no excuse if it’s not cooked to your preference!

Plan your night out here.

DOCKSIDE DINING CLUB

Dockside Dining1

Since the runaway success of the Baltic Triangle, there have been a spate of food court-style eating establishments popping up across the region. With their support for fledgling independent businesses who can pitch up their stalls, the bumper variety on offer and the buzzing atmosphere, it’s no wonder the concept has found a hungry audience amongst Merseyside’s gastronomes. Opening at the backend of the summer, this 80s styled space in Mann Island is fantastically located amongst some of the city’s best loved attractions. It’s also only less than five minutes walk from James Street station.

Plan your night out here.

ROCKET AND RUBY

Rocket And Ruby1

With an impressive portfolio boasting the fantastic Salt House Tapas and Bacaro, the announcement that Red And Blue Restaurants were opening up a neighbourhood cafe on Castle Street was met with some excitement. Thankfully, it has lived up to expectations. With an impressive array of gluten and dairy-free options, a breakfast menu and tremendous variety of small plates, Rocket And Ruby is another excellent eating choice for the business end of town.

Plan your night out here.

WRECKFISH

Wreckfish1

Wreckfish has already enjoyed a rave review from Guardian food critic Felicity Cloake and has been bustlingly busy since it opened in October last year. Owner Gary Usher has made a name for himself by cashing in on his popularity by crowdfunding a series of restaurants which has not let his backers down. The contemporary fare on offer at Wreckfish follows in the footsteps of Chester’s Sticky Walnut and Burnt Truffle in Heswall and for a relatively high end restaurant it has a laid back, welcoming atmosphere.
