The best local wine bars to visit

Wine lovers will celebrate National Wine Day on May 25.

And, while we don’t need an official reason to enjoy a glass, there’s no better excuse to appreciate everything that makes wine great.

The day supports producers, local wine shops and, of course, wine bars – and, thankfully, the region is full of fantastic ones.

Merseyside is also gearing up for a huge food and drink festival, Taste Liverpool. Drink Bordeaux, which takes place during the extended bank holiday weekend from June 2 to June 5.

But you don’t have to wait until the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations to gather your friends together and raise a glass. Here’s our guide to some of the best local wine bars to visit.

Petit Cafe 900 X 370Petit Cafe Du Coin

Liverpool’s Petit Cafe Du Coin, located on the corner of Duke Street and Berry Street, opened its doors in July 2017.

The French inspired cocktail and wine bar has a great wine selection, with wines hand-picked (and tested) by the staff.

Customers enjoy live jazz from Thursdays to Sundays as well as cheese and meat boards from local suppliers.

The bar stays popular by keeping its wine list fresh, as well as offering ‘great service, knowledge and a great ambiance’.

The Wro

Wro Loft 900 X 370

Established in 2006, The Wro is located at the gateway to West Kirby.

The Wro Bar is open every day from 1pm until late, making it a popular choice for a glass of wine and small plates.

There is a vibrant live music scene with sessions every Sunday evening, plus regular wine tasting events and a monthly book and film club in the function room.

Guests can sit and watch the world go by on the heated deck, while The Wro Loft has a balcony perfect for basking in the afternoon sunshine.

Nearest station: West Kirby

Buyers Club 300Buyers Club

Buyers Club in Liverpool city centre prides itself on its extensive wine list, with ‘nothing bad, nothing overrated and nothing overpriced’.

So, whether you prefer to play it safe with the house favourites or try something edgier, there is something to suit all tastes – either by the glass or the bottle.

The restaurant and bar, on Hardman Street, is a great place to go for a bite to eat after work, a drink in the garden, or for pre-theatre food and drinks.

It offers a vast selection of ‘natural wines’ so visitors can enjoy the drink in its purest from.

City Wine Bar

City Wine Bar 900 X 370

From winter warming wines to a summery spritz, City Wine Bar has got you covered.

Located in the heart of Liverpool’s business district, the independent bar and restaurant offers workers a calming escape.

Wine tastings (for groups of two to 30) include five of the bar’s most interesting and best-selling wines and accompanying small plates.

The full table service allows visitors to relax, unwind, and forget about the hustle and bustle on Old Hall Street – with a wine in hand.

There is also a modest upstairs space for celebrations, with the kitchen offering a buffet and canape menu.

Nearest station: Moorfields

Veeno 900 X 370

Chester’s Veeno has made a name for itself serving some of the finest Italian wines in the city.

Known for its Italian food and drink, the branch on Northgate Street has gained a loyal following.

The wines come from the family vineyard in Sicily, where great-grandfather Antonio planted the first vines in the XIX century.

Since then, the team has worked hard to ensure the quality and tradition could flow from the bottles to the glass in your hand.

Wine tastings include small glasses of wine, each paired with cured meats and cheese on a sharing platter. Guests also enjoy a sweet wine with homemade Italian tiramisu.

BoBoBobo 900 X370

BoBo is Liverpool’s authentic Iberian wine bar, tasca and charcuteria celebrating cafe culture.

Everything about it oozes sunshine and sophistication, from the homemade sangria to the European snacks and soundtracks evoking summer days in Spain and Portugal.

The intimate hideaway, on Castle Street, holds regular events – laughter-filled wine tastings and bottomless brunches with a difference.

It’s also popular with people from the Iberian peninsula, who join the locals for a glass or carafe of wine, bakery classics such as pastel de nata and a warm welcome.
