Pizza the action!

Like Motown music, Steven Spielberg films and Louis Theroux, pizza is a real crowd pleaser. You’d be hard pressed to find a person who doesn’t love a slice. Whether it’s a vegan special, a four cheese deluxe or a fiery meat feast, there is a pizza for pretty much everyone. This fact is borne out by the sheer number of pizza places which have opened up in Liverpool over the last few years. It could be said that you’re never more than 10 feet away from a pizza oven in Liverpool city centre. But what about the standard? Are the pizza chefs of Merseyside still coming up with the goods. The proof is in the pie, so we’ve put the pizza purveyors to the test and picked out our favourites (it’s a tough job…). And as it’s National Pizza Day on Friday 9th February, it seemed very timely. So here it is, a list of the must-try pizzerias around the Merseyrail network.

American Pizza Slice, Waterloo

American -Pizza -Slice -Liverpool -6

American Pizza Slice could be considered the real heroes of the Merseyside pizza scene. Blazing a trail in the early 2000s, their Whitechapel flagship branch was the first amongst the places to serve pizza by the slice. Since then we have seen many more follow their example and APS themselves have added two more branches off the back of their Whitechapel success. Up in Waterloo you’ll find their beautiful array of classical specialities which will transport you to downtown Manhattan.

Nearest Station: Waterloo is a short walk away.

Andre’s, West Kirby

Andres West Kirby

Food lovers in West Kirby aren’t found wanting when it comes to top notch eateries and pizza lovers are equally well catered for. Andre’s on Banks Road is an Italian and pizzeria which puts real pride in its food, its presentation and the welcome received by customers. More importantly however is their superb selection of stone baked pizza. There is also a fantastic menu of calzone which will satisfy the hungriest bellies.

Nearest Station: West Kirby is a short walk away.

Santa Maluco, Liverpool

Speaking of satisfying the hungriest bellies, Santa Maluco’s Rodízio style means that you are served all the pizza you can eat. The Castle Street venue deal in pizza from the Brazilian tradition, this means more toppings, thin bases and the special Requijao creamy cheese. If you’ve already tried traditional Italian pizza and the American style, now is the time to go Sao Paulo style. The Brazilian city is world’s biggest consumer of pizza apparently, which means they must be doing something right!

Nearest Station: Moorfields is a short walk away.

Prezzo, New Brighton

Prezzo New Brighton

New Brighton’s Marine Parade features all you need for a great night out: there’s a chimichanga Mexican restaurant, an independent cinema, the Marino lounge for eats and cocktails, a Prezzo for fine pizza and even a Travelodge (if you need to sleep all that off!) Less than ten minutes walk from New Brighton station, the complex offers great views of the Mersey and Prezzo is one of the best places to enjoy the vista with floor to ceiling windows to stare out over your margarita.

Nearest Station: New Brighton is a short walk away.

Nightcrawler, Liverpool

Another slice dealer in the city centre, Nightcrawler is adjoined to gin specialists, The Merchant, on Parr Street. A regularly refreshed menu offers some nicely original toppings such as The Hulk (feta cheese, pine nuts, mozzarella, spring onion and rocket). Daytime patrons also get half price slices until 7pm and night owls can get access until midnight, a handy way to soak up that gin!

Nearest Station: Liverpool Central is a short walk away.

Italian Club, Liverpool

Italian Club

For genuine Italian authenticity, Italian Club on Bold Street is up there with the best. Part of a family of outlets which includes a boutique bakery and a wonderful fish restaurant, the Italian Club’s original establishment is still perhaps their finest. Its Italian food as it should be, that is simple, elegant and packed with flavour. Why get a plane to Rome when you can alight at Liverpool Central and experience this?

Nearest Station: Liverpool Central is a short walk away.

Al Dente, Wallasey

Al Dente

Al Dente is another Merseyside gem which really cares about its customers’ experience. The Italian style decor gives it a quaint ambience while the back-to-basics menu allows the Al Dente chefs to do justice to Italy’s culinary reputation. Don’t go to Al Dente expecting off-the-wall pizza toppings, expect the classics done properly.

Nearest Station: Wallasey Village is a short walk away.

Il Forno, Liverpool

Il -Forno

Il Forno is part of Duke Street’s East Village complex which aims to bring a bit of NYC to L1. Il Forno along with the A-Tavola deli make the area feel more like Little Italy, but if you ignore this minor geographical discrepancy, you can really live it up Big Apple style. It has established a fine reputation for itself in Merseyside foodie circles and it’s richly deserved. Among it’s many accolades, the restaurant won Best Pizza at the 2015 English Italian Awards meaning it’s a must-visit for pizza people.

Nearest Station: Liverpool Central is a short walk away.

La Fattorio, Chester

With a choice of over 30 different pizzas on the menu at La Fattorio, this central Chester Italian should be on the radar of every self-respecting pizza connoisseur in the North-West. The quality of the hand rolled dough is another reason to make the pilgrimage and the restaurant’s busy bustling atmosphere is also an added bonus as La Fattorio has proved itself as a firm favourite of Chester’s foodie community.

Nearest Station: Chester is a short walk away.
