New Year is the perfect time to get out and enjoy some of our region's beautiful open spaces.
We're lucky to have plenty of of local routes to choose from, from woodland wanders, to a stroll by the River Mersey or a winter walk along the beach. Below are some of our favourites spots to get some fresh air, all a short walk from a Merseyrail station.
Fresh and scenic winter walks amongst the sweeping costal pinewoods and dramatic sand dunes are sure to get put you in a good mood! Wrap up warm and enjoy the breath-taking views towards the sea and sand dunes.
If you are lucky you might also just spot some of the red squirrels or natterjack toads!

The Otterspool Promenade provides beautiful views across the River Mersey, especially on a bright winter’s day.
With a wide footpath for walkers and bikers stretching right along the river, why not start at Aigburth and take a seasonal stroll to the Albert Dock where you can grab a warm hot chocolate and do a spot of shopping at some of the fantastic independents on offer.

If you have not yet seen Sefton Park in the early frost of a winter morning, you need to! A magical scene unfolds by the lake that you can circuit around before exploring the more woody areas around the well-kept 200 acre park.
Why not complete your winter walk at Lark Lane where you can pick up a coffee or a glass of mulled wine at some of the many independent restaurants and cafes on offer.

We know you may have frequented this beach before, usually in the summer, but have you given thought to visiting in the winter?! You might want to when you consider the sweeping, unspoilt views that this coast awarded beach has on offer.
Ainsdale also features an amazing conservation of wildlife that is still visible in the winter months.

Once an old railway line, the Wirral Way offers a 12 mile stretch of stunning scenery and historical railway architecture including Hadlow Station, which remains in the same Victorian style it had many years ago.
Perfect for a brisk walk or a cycle, the Wirral Way could be considered as one of Merseyside’s best kept historical secrets!
