From morning 'til night, the best places to eat in Crosby

Think Crosby’s all about the Iron Men? Think again. While all eyes have been on the wave of new restaurants opening further up the Mersey in Liverpool, Crosby’s restaurateurs have been quietly upping their own game, creating a collection of exciting eateries which have changed the landscape of this popular suburb’s food and drink market beyond all recognition. Sitting alongside Crosby’s grand homes and pretty parks, you’ll now find a whole host of independent coffee shops, bistros and restaurants that are well worth a visit. So, whether it’s breakfast or dinner you’re after, take a look at our pick of some of the best eateries within walking distance of Blundellsands and Crosby train station.

So Salsa

Salsa

Opened in 2010 by the owners of the Fat Italian restaurants in Crosby, Ormskirk and Burscough, this popular tapas restaurant on Cooks Road has more than made its mark over the past nine years. Despite being sold on in August 2017, So Salsa hasn’t lost any of its charm, and still offers a wide range of Spanish and international cuisine with separate menus catering for vegans and children too. Open evenings only during the week, and from lunchtime Friday to Sunday, it’s equally as suited to families as it is to couples. But be warned – word has got out about this place, making booking essential.

This is Livin’

This Is Livin

Anyone who watched the 2017 series of Great British Bake Off will undoubtedly remember loveable contestant Flo. And if you ever wondered what her mouthwatering cakes taste like in real life, This is Livin’ offers you the chance to find out. Owned by Flo’s son, and offering homemade cakes by Flo herself, this place has been a huge hit with locals since opening in September 2015. Located out of the way on Carnegie Avenue, its large patio and retractable roof is typical of its laid-back, casual vibe. Head there early for brunch, or stay late for a meal and cocktails. Either way, just make sure you stay long enough to sample Flo’s cakes.

Distance from station: 10 minutes’ walk

Livin’ Kitchen

Livin Kitchen

Following the success of This is Livin’, November 2017 saw the opening of the smaller Livin Kitchen on the lively College Road, offering brunch, lunch, small plates, flatbreads and Flo-made cakes from morning until 10pm. The charcuterie and cheese boards alone are reason to visit this Parisian café-style bistro, as you can make up your own by choosing from a wide range of meats and cheeses then enjoy them with breads, biscuits, fruit and chutney. Wine and beer connoisseurs will particularly enjoy the craft ales from local breweries and Catalan sherries and ports too. The team hold regular special events such as the Secret High Tea Party and themed evenings too, so keep an eye on their Facebook page to see what’s coming up.

Distance from station: 10 minutes’ walk

The Tree House

Tree House 2

Sister restaurant to So Salsa, The Tree House on Coronation Road has become a firm favourite in the area. From the eclectic artwork that adorns the walls to the sizeable tree that takes pride of place in the dining room, this place oozes charm, and with an impressive selection of vegetarian and vegan options as well as steak on offer, there really is something here for everyone. Try The Tree House, and then come back in a few weeks time to check out the next offering from these restaurateurs, Rock Salt, due to open just three doors down the road in April 2019.

Distance from station: 16 minutes walk

Moose Coffee

Moose Coffee

Inspired by the iconic American breakfast culture, Moose Coffee aims to take the sort of brunch experience you’d get in downtown New York – and replicate it in Crosby. They’ve pretty much nailed it too; from the buttermilk pancakes to the maple syrup-covered waffles, the extensive all-day breakfast menu screams American influence, and offers some jaw-dropping alternatives to the great British fry-up. The range of Egg Benedicts in particular are truly a sight to behold. There are other branches in Liverpool and Manchester city centres, but Crosby is the only out-of-town location, so make your way to College Road and see what all the fuss is about.

Distance from station: 10 minutes walk

The Crosby Tea Rooms

Crosby

Cosy, pretty, and home to what may well be the tastiest dairy and gluten-free cakes for miles around, this vintage-inspired modern tea house on College Road offers light meals, hot drinks and tasty cakes at little tables and chairs in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Try one of the lunches on offer, or indulge yourself with an afternoon tea complete with an extensive choice of loose leaf teas. The Crosby Tea Rooms is dog friendly too, and even offers dog treats on the menu so your furry friend isn’t left out of the foodie fun.

Distance from station: 8 minutes walk

Hampsons

Hampsons

Named after the late Billy Hampson, a member of the Hampson family who once ran well-known barbers shops on Westminster Road, Kirkdale, and Priory Road, Anfield, Hampsons prides itself on its personal service and attention to detail. Located on Coronation Road, its chilled ambiance and urban rustic feel makes it the perfect place to catch up with friends and family. The menu offers a great range of small plates to nibble on while enjoying drinks, as well as an enviable Sunday roast and tasty desserts. Definitely one to put on your ‘must try’ list.

Distance from station: 14 minutes walk

The Little Deli

Little Deli

The brainchild of two local mums who wanted to offer wholesome, freshly prepared food in a deli setting, the limited seating on offer means you’ll need to book ahead to ensure a place at this hidden gem on Endbutt Lane. Fans of Deliciously Ella and ‘Body Coach’ Joe Wicks will love the range of options on offer, which range from wellness shots to Buddha Bowls. There’s even a special ‘Wellness’ menu for those who need a little nutritional TLC. Children are not only catered for but encouraged too, with baby changing facilities, high chairs and flexible menu choices. Book now and take time to enjoy real food for the soul.

Distance from station: 20 minutes' walk

Pioneer Bar and Brasserie

Pioneer

Located on the corner of Liverpool Road and Endbutt Lane, Pioneer has become a popular spot since it opened 12 years ago. Offering everything from all-day breakfasts and afternoon teas to dinner and live music, this stylish bar and restaurant really does offer something for everyone. Try one of the small plate sharers – the Spanish one includes meatballs, patatas bravas and a chorizo dish, but there are Asian and Greek options too – or opt for gourmet burgers, seabass or halloumi fries. Whatever your choice of food, smart casual dress is definitely the order of the day in this glamorous eatery.
