Christmas shows for adults

The festive season is almost upon us and this year the show can go on!

After many theatres had to close or postpone productions due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Merseyside venues will welcome theatregoers this Christmas.

And this winter’s theatre calendar is packed with shows grown-ups can enjoy without the kids.

After last year’s cancellations, some of the best seats were snapped up with months to go. But there are still tickets left for some great shows, so book the babysitter and plan your night out now…

The Scouse Sleeping Beauty at Royal Court

Scouse Sleeping Beauty 900 X 370

Forget the odd double entendre, Liverpool’s Royal Court panto is full of adult jokes.

The Scouse Sleeping Beauty promises to be packed with live music and ‘utterly inappropriate content’.

And, like the theatre’s last few Christmas shows, the comedy comes with a warning – it is not for kids.

Written by Kevin Fearon and directed by Stephen Fletcher, the panto features wicked fairy Maleffluent who curses Scouse princess Ora – a spell that can only be broken by a true love’s kiss.

Tickets from £15. Visit

When: November 19 to January 15, 2022.

Nearest station: Lime Street low level for Wirral line, Liverpool Central for Northern line.

Dreamgirls at Liverpool Empire

Dreamgirls 900 X 370

The first UK tour of hit musical Dreamgirls will open at the Liverpool Empire Theatre this December.

Featuring songs Listen and One Night Only, the award-winning production had its West End premiere in 2016 – 35 years after opening on Broadway.

The Voice finalist Nicole Raquel Dennis, who starred in Dreamgirls at London’s Savoy Theatre, will perform as Effie White. Sharlene Hector will play the role in certain performances.

Dreamgirls tells the story of The Dreams – Effie, Lorrell (Paige Peddie) and Deena (Natalie Kassanga) – three singers who discover the ruthless realities of showbusiness in the 1960s.

Tickets from £13 at

When: December 14 to January 1, 2022.

Nearest station: Lime Street low level for Wirral line, Liverpool Central for Northern line

The Comedy Store at Floral Pavilion

The Comedy Store 900 X 370

The Comedy Store will make its way to Floral Pavilion in New Brighton this winter, with more shows planned for 2022.

John Bishop, Sarah Millican, Jimmy Carr, Rhod Gilbert and Eddie Izzard have all trod the Store’s boards.

And it remains one of the best places to see fresh talent from around the globe.

The December line-up will feature Thomas Green, Marlon Davis, Tom Lucy and Bethany Black.

Tickets are £16.75 from Over 18s only.

When: December 17 at 8pm

For adults only, there will be The Secret Circus (December 10 and 11) and Nana Funk (December 17), while folk fans can see Us Four: A Festive Folk Night on December 16.
