Best places to enjoy festive food and drink

From meeting up with friends to enjoying after-work drinks with colleagues, December is a lovely time to enjoy some pre-Christmas food and drink.

And from Christmas markets to grotto-themed bars, we have an amazing selection of food and drink offerings in the region perfect for kick-starting the festivities.

So check out our guide below and get a date in the diary for a Christmas catch-up with a difference.

The Tapas Kitchen, West Kirby

Thetapaskitchen WK

Offering a great mix of traditionally Spanish tapas, this much-loved restaurant in the heart of West Kirby is a great option for groups of friends or families who are looking to save the turkey for Christmas Day!

Offering a range of spicy and savoury dishes, the Tapas Kitchen serves up Andalusian style chicken with honey, saffron, raisins, cinnamon and pine nuts after the baked artisan bread and oils.

However, Christmas food lovers, do not fear! Every Sunday The Tapas Kitchen goes British with succulent roast meats, roasties, root vegetable mash and proper gravy.

Baltic Market, Liverpool

Baltic (1)

Possibly one of the coolest places to enjoy the season, Liverpool’s first street food market is transformed into a festive hangout in the run-up to Christmas, adorned from head to toe in Christmas decorations.

Throw in a mix of fabulous food, Christmas cocktails, film screenings and discos, along with gift, dog and farmers markets, and you can see why this place is so popular.

And of course, this being the Baltic Market, you can expect so much more than just your traditional Christmas fayre. That means Spanish tapas from Lunya, poutine from Caribou Poutine, wood fired pizzas, halloumi fries, Korean street food and lots more.

From December 1, Baltic Market will be open five days a week, between 5-11pm on Wednesday and Thursdays, 12pm-midnight on Fridays, 11am-midnight on Saturdays and 11am-9pm on Sundays, closing between December 23 - December 27.

Walking distance: 20 minutes

Miracle on Seel Street, Liverpool

Miracle

Knock yourself out at this Christmas grotto bar for adults, which is quite possibly the nearest thing to being in Santa’s living room that you’ll probably ever experience.

Located just a stone’s throw away from Central station, it’s the perfect place to call in for a mulled wine, mince pie and more, but it’s small and cosy dimensions mean that you’ll need to book a ticket HERE to guarantee a seat.

For £10, you’ll get a welcome drink, a goody bag and a seat, and you can spend a maximum of two hours at your table.

But the Christmas experience isn’t limited to festive music and Christmas-themed cocktails; there’s also a number of movie dates on offer too. Check out their Facebook page for more information cosy up on one of the overstuffed armchairs for a couple of fun-filled hours.

Walking distance: Five minutes

Duke Street Food and Drink Market, Liverpool

Duke Street

If pulling crackers and wearing paper crowns isn’t your thing, then you’ll thank your lucky stars that Duke Street Food and Drink Market exists.

Made up of mostly communal tables and featuring a number of different kitchens, you won’t be limited to turkey and Christmas pud; instead you can treat yourself to options such as the Alternative Christmas Lunch. For parties of between eight and 100, pay just £30 per person and you’ll receive credit vouchers which can be spent across the venue (excluding Pilgrim), along with a designated area for your party.

With names such as Ginger, Bone and Block, Cinder, Indigo Greens, Finca and Cucina Di Vincenzo on offer, the only problem you’ll have is in deciding which one to head to first.

Nearest station: Liverpool Central

Walking distance: Seven minutes

Liverpool Christmas Market

Christmas Market 008

Now a firm fixture on the city’s Christmas scene, expect log cabins, Christmas tipples, and a typically festive offering at this atmospheric traditional Christmas Market.

Located at St George’s Plateau, with the spectacular buildings of St George’s Hall, the Walker Art Gallery and Central Library creating a stunning setting, you’ll find everything you’d expect from a Christmas market, from traditional foods and sweet treats to lovely, unusual gifts for all the family.

A word of warning though; forget the frenzied Christmas shopping you’ll need to indulge in in other parts of the city; here you should allow yourself time to amble around the stalls, Yorkshire Pudding Wrap in hand, at a leisurely pace while you soak up the ambiance of a Christmas treat that, after all, only comes once a year.

Nearest station: Liverpool Central

Walking distance: Ten minutes

Allotment, Birkdale

Allotment

Located just two minutes away from Birkdale station in the heart of the village, Allotment has been a big hit among locals since it threw open its doors in 2017.

Residing in the former HSBC bank, the restaurant has retained many of its former features, including the grand marble floor and the bank vault, providing a feeling of grandeur which makes it the perfect place for Christmas celebrations.

And if the beautifully decorated interior wasn’t enough to convince you, then the menu certainly will be.

There’s a good range of starters such as smoked salmon and baked camembert, while mains include roast turkey, hake fillet and wild mush ravioli. There’s even a Christmas buffet too. And priced at just £15 per person, you won’t need to rob a bank in order to eat in one.

Walking distance: Two minutes

Chester Christmas Market

Chester -christmas -market -1

There’s nothing quite like a Christmas market to give you the festive feels – and Chester’s is one of the best around. Within the 70 twinkly, traditional wooden chalets, you’ll find a magical world of locally made produce, mulled wine, and much much more.

For presents with a difference, stock up on the handmade crafts, jewellery, accessories on offer and give yourself a pat on the back for supporting the independent retailers whose beautiful gifts make the market so special.

Located in the historic Town Hall Square opposite Chester Cathedral, Chester Christmas Market runs until December 22 and is open seven days a week, between 10am-6pm Sunday to Wednesday with late night opening to 8pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
