To the south of Southport are miles of beaches and sand dunes bounded by woodland and grassland. The dunes at Ainsdale and Birkdale and at Lifeboat Road and Ravenmels in Formby are home to a wide variety of wildlife, including the rare Natterjack Toad. At Freshfield, you will find a National Trust property where the endangered Red Squirrel thrives. Further south, there are walks along the sea front at Hightown and Crosby Marine Park which is also popular for watersports.
