Wirral Country Park includes the former West Kirby to Hooton railway (now a colourful footpath), wildlife-rich woodlands and low cliffs near to the visitor centre, grassy promontories rising above the miles of fine sand along the Dee Estruary (itself an internationally important wildfowl reserve). Views across to the Clwydian Mountains are superb.
Details of seasonal boat trips and a comprehensive guided walks and events programme are available from the award winning visitor centre. West Kirkby is also the starting point for walks across the sands to the Hilbre Islands Local Nature Reserve. (Access to these Islands is governed by the tides. Hillbre is cut off for about 6 hours at high tide.) Tide timetables are displayed at Dee Lane slipway noticeboard or check at the visitor centre.
